Great thoughts here. Thank you. I think the lesson that always stings is the one where our pride finally comes tumbling down. But the relief when it does, because our God in Christ, is good, is such a balm. And lo and behold, He builds us better than we ever could ourselves! Lord, may You guide all our discernments so we may listen well, repent of our lack of humility, and put our trust in You.

I really appreciate you sharing your story, Ashley! I started following your editing business long before I recognized that I wanted to pursue book editing myself (trying to get the business up and running is a whole thing I'm trying to navigate). And now at a moment when I know that I want to start a family soon, finding your "revised" story feels like kismet in understanding how your parenting, spiritual, and business journey has tied together and shifted your course. So, thank you for sharing so honestly! <3

Thank you! I love the work so much it's painful when I don't have a book to edit. XD

It's the seasons that are a little tougher to ride through, but working on diversifying my business a little bit to help smooth those bumps.

I am so grateful for all you articulated in these two posts! It’s amazing how your journey mirrors mine in some ways. I began freelance editing 10+ years ago and eventually became a full-time managing editor working in Christian publishing.

I felt a sense of displacement for 3 years until last fall when the organization I worked for crumbled. I had held on to such a sense of identity and misplaced purpose in this editing role, and hardly had any joy in it. Although the job loss was abrupt and painful, it was mostly a relief.

In those 3 years previously, though, God had been pulling me toward what I feel is my true vocation—counseling. In His kindness, I had already found part-time counseling work before losing my longstanding editing job. I can’t help but think how things could have been different if I didn’t buy into the very same false theologies that you mentioned! But the winding road has led me here, and for that I’m grateful.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Carissa! Our journeys are indeed so similar. A managing editor position would have been the goal I worked toward once my kids were older, had I kept on the same path. Blessings to you as you work in your counseling vocation! I've learned so much about that field in my spiritual direction program and have respect for the work you're doing.
